I must admit that I have been very skeptical when reading books that address issues of race – whether it is race relations or specific challenges that a particular ethnic group may face. Personally, I’ve found a number of these books to be highly opinionated, full of anger, resentment, hatred, unforgiveness, selfishness or to be extremely intellectualized, laced with political agendas and/or racist in and of themselves.

When it comes down to religion and race, publications can become even more skewed as authors struggle to place legitimate concerns into a mature, Holy Spirit led biblical perspectives. I’ve had a difficult time navigating the outlook and opinions conveyed by varying authors over the years as they have rarely dealt with the heart of God concerning His people from a Kingdom perspective.

You see, our Father in Heaven understands the injustice, pain and suffering of people and people groups. Were it not so, He would never have sent Moses as a deliverer or His son Jesus to save us. We must constantly remind ourselves that the heart of God carries a single vision – one rooted in the conviction of sin for all people, confession, repentance, forgiveness and total reconciliation on the part of all parties involved.

I saw this cry between the pages of “Breaking the Curse Off Black America” by Apostle Willie F. Wooten. By the leading of Holy Spirit, Apostle Wooten was able to clearly express the problems plaguing Black America from a perspective that I have, quite honestly, never encountered from a Christian author or from many Black leaders in our day. At certain points in reading it, I found myself repenting for my part in contributing to the mind-sets and behaviors of a people; and praying for opportunities and encounters to see massive forgiveness and repentance go forth in the midst of all congregations nationwide. My God! We need understanding! We need healing!

Even in that, one premise made in this book stands out to me. It is this: There are ancient, generational strongholds hovering over every race of people in the world – including Black America. Until the foundations of sin are acknowledged and destroyed, the cycle of sin plaguing them will continue to keep these groups in bondage. In addition, there is only one answer to breaking the curse and it is Jesus Christ.

Using His own life as a blue print, Apostle Wooten takes the reader on an eye opening journey into His life – one filled with the pain and disappointment of being abandoned by his father; and the inward struggle – that spiritual battle not to travel down the same road with his wife and children. He uses this aspect of his testimony to help others identify and address the root causes of curses plaguing Black America, revealing how it is not only distinctively tied to times of slavery and for some the deep rooted feelings of inferiority — but also to the Civil Rights movement from 40 years ago. He walks the reader through understanding curses as defined by scripture, the symptoms of curses, the cost of ignorance, the need for Godly leadership, and the power of prayer and spiritual warfare.

In the end, He provides a very thorough, biblically sound cure for the curse plaguing Black America. It is one that involves an open environment among church leadership and those who have been called in strategic positions to lead our people to begin that biblical process of healing. Apostle Wooten writes, “Repentance must take place in the Church because it has been living a lie and is in denial. The curse over God’s people must be broken with confession, repentance and prayer. When this takes place we will see a new Black America.”

What a profound statement.

Breaking The Curse Off Black America is a wake-up call for every believer who has struggled to interpret the root causes of many of the issues Black America is facing today. This will be a very difficult book for some to read as it digs into the issues of slavery, race relations and the leadership influences of the Civil Rights Movement. It calls leaders into accountability concerning their actions and behavior. It forces them to accept responsibility for contributing to the condition of Black America.  The message conveyed by Apostle Wooten touches the altars of men – those things that they hold in high regard. It brings great clarity and understanding to Black America when read with Holy Spirit at the helm.

While the focus specifically addresses Black America, any reader can see that it is imperative that every ethnic group take into consideration those curses that could be operating in their midst as well on the level revealed here. This book is a treasure. We need individual restoration,  restoration in our families, restoration in our communities and restoration in our congregations as a whole.
