Teresa Robbins, Author
Book Review by Theresa Harvard Johnson
For the prophetic scribe writing is not a process. It is an act of obedience. It is the acknowledgement that God speaks into the innermost recesses of the heart, releasing his way and his will. Prophetic writing is the result of this speaking and the urgency roaring and raging within the scribe that says “go and tell.”
Jeremiah described it this way: “But if I say, I won’t think about him, I won’t speak in his name any more,” then it seems as though a fire is burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I wear myself out trying to hold it in, but I just can’t do it.”[1]
Author Teresa Robbins has released such a fire in a powerful compilation of prophetic poetry entitled, “God Speaks.” Every single poem carries a weight or a burden of intimacy that immerses readers in the Fathers vision for restoration.
The poems, which often open like prayers and decrees, are organized into four distinct chapters that describe and reveal the mind of Christ; remind readers of the depth of love Christ has for mankind and the call for repentance; uncover the Father’s intent and purpose for mankind; and reveal the reality and path toward victorious living. While some of the poems are instructive and corrective in nature, they unfold in such a way that the reader is convicted not condemned; and given a practical, tangible hope for restoration.
Another highlight of God Speaks rests on Robbins ability to rely on poetry along this poetic journey of bringing scripture to life in context with today. What sets this collection apart, at least to me, is the underlining depths of spiritual intimacy behind each poem. It is obvious, from the very first page, that we are walking with Robbins along her own personal journey of spiritual maturation, wisdom of years and the reality of continued growth.
As a result, I would classify this Holy Spirit inspired compilation as a type of prophetic, poetic devotional that readers could wake up to in the morning or settle down in the evenings to read in the midst of their personal prayer or journaling times. As the pages are turned, readers can expect to receive prophecy, be convicted of any sin in their lives, and to receive great exhortation and encouragement for the journey.
God Speaks is a treasure among Christian poetry collections. Robbins packed each page with rich content, soundness of doctrine and ancient foundations in the faith. By no means is this an ordinary volume of poetry: Rather, it is the word of God to His people from a present day prophet.
Truly, God still speaks.
