The Shelf Life of Prophetic Scribal Books & Projects

Some “prophetic” books and scribal projects have shelf lives or expiration dates just like the milk and cheese in our refrigerators. For many prophetic scribes and writers, this is a hard truth to accept. After all, we would like to believe our messages are as eternal and useful as God’s word.

The truth is, some books are for a specific time and that is it.

Back in the day, I had manuals that came with CDs inside and instructions for installing MS Word on my computer. Then, there came a day when those were obsolete and I had new choices – download from the web or use MS Word in a cloud.

Well… so it in the natural, it is also in the Spirit.

Not only should prophetic writers consider the fact that a decade-old book or project may need to be updated with current, spiritual technology; but that sometimes, it may need to be taken out of print altogether as we enter a new time, a new day… a “generational place” where those previous conclusions, thoughts, and insight might no longer fit. This is also true as it relates to our own personal growth. What a person may have believed or understood as truth a few short years ago, may have a more mature or clearer meaning now.

My point is this: We must be ready and willing to change… transform, update. New seasons require upgrades.

There are two books I wrote that quite frankly contain things that I have grown into understanding in a greater measure. Some of those posts are even embarrassing to me now as I realize how youthful my insight was at the time. I am in the process of retiring one of those books and rewriting the other one as time permits.

CHANGE IS GOOD! Even the Lord recognized that Moses’ day was over… and sent us Christ. We are constantly reminded throughout scripture that the old does indeed pass away and things become new. We are reminded of perceiving a new thing and being challenged to recognize it when it comes.

In no way does it mean that the projects were not meaningful. Rather, it is a reminder to grow and elevate, to put the past behind and move forward. We understand this from a “season’s ending” perspective in other areas of ministry — but it applies here as well.

Certain songs, musical compositions, etc. are eternally with us – never ceasing in their relevance or impact from generation to generation. Others surge forth with immense power and authority for a season never to be mentioned again. Certain moves of God require certain manifestations (in the scripture this translated word means “coming to light” at the appointed time). Those assignments fulfill their purpose… and then, they are no more!

Over the years I’ve updated book covers, rewritten texts, updated blogs, added disclaimers to things that needed further explanation, etc. Holy Spirit even told me once to leave my mistakes in view… so that people could see the journey and be empowered from where they are. At other times, I’ve been told to jump ship and permanently retire certain things.

It’s hard to let go of our prophetic labors of love… but we must! Holding on to the past FOR A SCRIBE… prevents us from moving forward in NEW SCRIBAL DIMENSIONS. It might not be working for you… or moving because the season has passed.
