Consistency: The Dirty Word of Progress

Posted on 01/26/202101/19/2022 by Theresa Harvard Johnson

CONSISTENCY can be a dirty word in ministry for many people.

It’s a disagreeable demand in a world where folks prefer praying to have it instead of developing it as a discipline. It means a person will have to put systems in place to overcome some very bad habits and thought processes to get some things done.

YET, it is this 11-letter word that “catapults” one’s ministry AND spiritual growth when it’s put in action from year to year with a Christ-centered vision.

CONSISTENCY is the practice of applying your mind to a practical, attainable goal inspired or released by the Lord… and taking daily steps to fulfilling it whether there is a quick return or a long-term foundation being built.

CONSISTENCY simply makes this statement: “What I started, I am going to finish at all costs.”

Make A Decision

The thing is, it doesn’t matter whether it is a project or a personal, private goal. CONSISTENCY works the same in our mind and heart.

You see, when you are consistent at something you can break the back of wrong thought processes. You can kick bad habits to the curb. AND IN BETWEEN, you are learning things about yourself that you’ve never known and gaining so many new experiences that they contribute to your natural and spiritual growth and development.

As a mentor to a few, I see so many people fail at things simply because they can’t grasp hold of consistency. They can’t wrap their minds around THEIR ROLE in making things happen. So, they depend on spiritual magic tricks to break strongholds on their life that are SIMPLY AREAS OF DISCIPLINE FOR MOST PEOPLE that must be overcome.

It is grievous for mentors to look up (years later) and see people they have poured everything into “IN THE SAME PLACE” they were when they started. If you are a mentor, you know this isn’t a throw off on anyone… but a conversation that must be had over and over again.

If you are a mentee, please understand that the goal of any kind of mentorship – especially mentorship ordained by God – is to move you from stagnation to purposeful movement by giving YOU TOOLS that can help you walk through.

And yes, there can be mitigating factors that hinder consistency. But get this: YOU STILL HAVE TO GIVE YOUR ALL TO THE PROCESS even as you work through those mitigating factors. Consistency is not without compassion; BUT IT IS without excuses!

Consistency Is A Superpower

CONSISTENCY is the STRONG ARM of breaking through and into places of success in our lives. The rewards that flow from it are immeasurable…. and well worth every tear we cry and brick that comes out of the wall.

CONSISTENCY is a fixer… that connects every line-by-line effort and builds the momentum we need to COME THROUGH! Without it… we can find ourselves in endless cycles of complaint, frustration, false beliefs, anger toward others we feel should help us more… and most of all… there is no movement toward defined vision.

Most people can defeat this enemy WITHIN THEM with a mind shift.

I have discovered that most people, consistency is not an issue of fasting and prayer, but a decision… just like the decision many make to get up in the morning and go to work IN WHATEVER CONDITION THEY ARE IN.

We’ve almost completed the first month of this year. We have declared that this year will be different and NEW! Well, it can be NEW if we learn to embrace the newness that is already in our hands.

Don’t live on the sidelines of your life. Journey through it… and harness the power of CONSISTENCY.

Ecclesiastes 7:8, “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.”
