Overcoming Discouragement with “SURE” Hope

Psalm 46:1 CJB, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

This morning I awoke in intercession for scribes. I saw, heard and felt the depth of discouragement raging over many of them as they were pummeled into hopelessness. As I prayed, I could see hosts of angels dispatched to war on their behalf. It was such a battle because the discouragement was intense. It was then that I heard the voice of the Lord shout: “Arise! Arise! I am with you! I am with you! I have come to renew your SURE HOPE!”

As I sit here now, I am reminded of the days I have spent in discouragement concerning my own scribal ministry. I wasn’t gazing on the past; rather, I was remembering just how far God has brought me. For several seasons, I was on a rollercoaster. It was as if I would take one step forward and be pushed five steps back within myself. I often wondered if God was truly with me — that’s just how bad those setbacks were. Then, just before I was ready to throw in the towel and give up on this “scribal thing” God would make it known that he was “my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

And I was in trouble — at risk of losing my SURE HOPE.

The Sin of Spiritual Plagiarism by Theresa Harvard Johnson

Whether you’re surfing the web about goings-on in the church today or casually engaging in conversations with experienced leaders in the body of Christ, the mere search on the Internet or mention of the term “plagiarism” in connection with the congregation initiates a string of editorials online and long, in-depth discussions concerning the state of the congregation today.

      On one side of the discussion, leaders talk about how the Internet has made today’s ministers lazy and trapped them in cycles of what some call “borrowing sermon ideas from others” instead of searching the Spirit through their relationship with God for their own unique messages. On the other hand there is this belief that in the present day church, a number of leaders just don’t care – and want the easy way out in their bible studies and Sunday morning services. Then there’s this group of broken believers, those whose lives have been disrupted, and in some instances devastated by the effects of plagiarism among the congregation, who write or record their experiences or share testimonies about how they’ve been affected by the sin of plagiarism.

      Regardless of the conversations, we cannot deny that the moral and ethical climate of the church today is at an all-time low. The news media and the web have made it increasingly difficult for anyone to hide their bad or even questionable behavior as it occurs. It has also provided a blindingly bright platform for the congregation to take center-stage amid increasing accusations – some valid and divisive, and others fictitious. It forces us to confront ourselves in the mirror and take a close look at who we view as leaders, truly considering whether or not our motives for ministry are centered upon God’s heart – reconciliation; or an increased man-made focus in hot pursuit of prestige, entitlement and ease in a celebrity driven man-made-ministry environment.

Word of the Lord: When Men Fail To Acknowledge Your Call

Posted on 06/07/2013 by Theresa Harvard Johnson

This morning in my prayer time, I heard father say: “Stop striving for men to acknowledge the call on your life. Stop wallowing in the disappointment of not being recognized for who I have called and trained you to be. Don’t you know that I see you? Don’t you realize that I am the one who has called you? Beloved, let ME be enough for you, and walk with you in this season of your life. In my perfect timing, I will bring you out of this place and put you on display.”

Over the years, I've received words like this many times for myself and for others. The mere fact that God is bringing this message back to us and in many different ways, at least to me, shows that we are never too mature to be reminded of His will for us. As I prayed, Father brought some specific people to the forefront whom I have been praying with. I sent this to them, and then He instructed me to post this message publicly.

Some believers have, at some point in their lives walked this way. They have longed or even craved for others (especially leaders in their lives) to recognize or see what God is doing in and through them. I know I've been in this place. But in some seasons, this just doesn’t happen… and you will "feel" forgotten, abandoned, overlooked, ignored, rejected, etc. Everything in your flesh will rise up and block the voice of God which is saying: "I am in the midst of this more than you know."

I am an invisible girl, sitting in an invisible chair;

People walk by me, never noticing that I am there.

They can’t hear my invisible screams as I rise or see me my invisible stand;

and when I reach for an embrace, they slip through my invisible hands.
